I had the distinct pleasure to be able to make this cake for Grandma Virginia McLaurin (the 106 year old woman who danced with President and Mrs. Obama) and the Harlem Globetrotters for their 107th and 90th birthdays respectively. As most people know, one of her wishes was to meet the President and another was to meet the Globetrotters. I used the Harlem Globetrotters “90 years” logo on the bottom cake and made a matching one for “Virginia McLaurin 107 years.” I used fondant for the base of the logo and the numbers, and then I used candy melts for the smaller letters. I mirrored the Globetrotters shorts for the bottom of the cake with stripes and stars and their ball for the top of the cake. As you can see, both Grandma Virginia and Zeus, a Globetrotter (and the Guinness Book of World Records holder for most dunks in a minute!) both loved the cake! This was, hands down, the coolest experience I have had making cakes!
